Young people have heard the warnings about skin cancer, but they’re still tanning anyway. (“Tanmaxxing,” as some call it.) Some social media creators call themselves “tanfluencers” and are posting their tan lines on the internet.
Here’s what you need to know
-
Middle East: The United States struck sites in southern Iran, and the country said it would respond. Iran’s supreme leader said American military bases in the region are no longer safe. Read the latest news.
-
Runoffs: There are five races to watch in Texas today. All eyes are on the Republican runoff in the Senate race between the incumbent John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is backed by President Trump.
-
Pope Leo: The pope warned of the risks from artificial intelligence in his first encyclical, a 42,300-word letter. Read the main takeaways.

-
Bigger group chat? Iceland is weighing joining the European Union. Trump’s threats to Greenland are part of the reason.
On a lighter note …
Two things you didn’t really need to know but now do:
-
Alamo Drafthouse, a movie theater chain, had a strict no-phones policy. Not anymore. The chain has instituted mobile ordering for its in-seat meals. Fans are not happy, and some have even started a petition.
-
Beyoncé said it best: “If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it.” Some couples are now putting a string on it, instead. (P.S. You should subscribe to Love Letter. I curate all the stories, if you fancy hearing even more from me. Click below to sign up!)
The New York Knicks are going to the N.B.A. finals for the first time in 27 years. I moved to New York just two years ago, and I’m already feeling a sense of hometown pride.
Your summer plans
I spent most of my summers in college in class or working. In 2023, I lived in San Francisco, where I had to tell everyone that I was a journalist and not a budding tech bro. (I was writing about food and wine for the local newspaper, which was pretty cool.)
What are your summer plans? Are you interning at a start up? Catching up on sleep? Volunteering on a farm? There’s no wrong answer. DM me on Instagram. I’ll feature a few of your responses in a future newsletter.
Before you go, a quick recommendation
There are few things I love more than rotting on a beach with a juicy book. My friends at The Book Review curated a list of the best beach reads, which can be read near any body of water. A kiddie pool counts!
Thanks for hanging out with me this morning. Write to us at inshort@nytimes.com. See you tomorrow! — Matt
