- Anthropologist (Cultural Anthropology Division): Master’s degree in Anthropology of a recognized University with more than fifty percent papers in Cultural Anthropology in final year examination + Three years research experience in Anthropology.
- Anthropologist (Physical Anthropology Division): Master’s degree in Anthropology of a recognized University with more than fifty percent papers in Physical Anthropology or Biological Anthropology in final year examination + Three years research experience in Anthropology.
- Age Limit: Maximum 35 years (UR) and 38 years (OBC) as on closing date. Age relaxation is admissible for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD/Ex-Servicemen/Central Government employees as per Government of India rules.
UPSC Anthropologist Recruitment 2026 Salary
- Selected candidates under UPSC Anthropologist Recruitment 2026 will be appointed on permanent Group-A Gazetted, Non-Ministerial posts in Level-10 of the 7th Central Pay Commission pay matrix (Rs. 56,100 – 1,77,500) along with applicable allowances.
- Probation period: 2 years. Governed by New Pension Scheme (NPS) effective from 01/01/2004.

- The UPSC Anthropologist Recruitment 2026 selection process consists of shortlisting (if applications are large) followed by Personal Interview.
- Shortlisting: Commission may adopt shortlisting criteria based on higher qualifications, experience, desirable qualifications or by holding a Recruitment Test (if required).
- Personal Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be called for interview. Minimum qualifying marks in interview: UR-50, OBC-45, SC/ST/PwBD-40 (out of 100).
- Final selection will be made on the basis of performance in the interview. Appointment orders will be issued by the Government.
