The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday (April 14, 2026) announced an interim hike in minimum wages for unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled workers, a day after workers organised a massive protest in Noida, in the Gautam Buddha Nagar district, which turned violent. The State government, however, has rejected claims that the minimum pay has been raised to ₹20,000 per month and stated that employers are not following this direction.
The State government announced that it has engaged with all relevant stakeholders and has opted to implement a temporary increase in the minimum wage. The procedure for establishing a minimum wage will commence following recommendations from a Wage Board, which the government plans to form next month. As part of this temporary measure, the State government has increased the minimum wage for unskilled workers throughout the State by as much as 21%, effective from April 1.
